Urgency of the research. The urgency of the proposed work is due to the need to expand the methodological tools for studying the phenomenon of the play within the modern philosophical discourse.

Target setting. The use of David Zilberman’s modal methodology will, on the one hand, expand the boundaries of the study of the play, on the other - justify its status as a complex multivariate phenomenon.

Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. The conceptual research core of the article consists of two areas, the first of which is a study on modal methodology (O. Gurko, I. Anellis, P. Blavatskyy, D. Raina etc.), the second is the source base of the article, presented by the texts of D. Zilberman and representatives of philosophical thought, who turned to the study of the phenomenon of the play (K. Apel, M. Bakhtin, J. Baudrillard, G. Hesse, G. Debor, L. Wittgenstein, N. Luhmann, H. Ortega y Gasset, J. Huizinga, etc.).

The research objective. The task of the research is to analyze the essence of the phenomenon of the play in a view of D. Zilberman’s modal methodology.

The statement of basic materials. There is an opinion about the prospects of studying the play in the context of language, culture and media. The phenomenon of the play through the prism of deontic, apodictic and hypothetical levels of D. Zilberman’s modal methodology is presented. It is revealed that at the deontic level of modalization, the play, as part of the indicated planes, is revealed through the concept of language games by L. Wittgenstein, understanding the essence of the play in the culture of J. Huizinga, F. Schiller and G. Hesse and in the context of “mass media reality” by N. Luhmann. It is substantiated that the dynamism of language development, the application of the game approach to the characterization of culture and the representation of the media space as a total play (J. Baudrillard) represent the essence of the apodictic level of modalization of the phenomenon of the play. It is proposed to comprehend the hypothetical level of modalization of the play by demonstrating the process of transformation of the research phenomenon in the context of language, culture and media, manifested through the theory of performatives, the phenomenon of Bakhtin’s carnival and manipulations, information throws and fakes in media reality.

Conclusions. The study allows us to say that the application of the principles of D. Zilberman’s modal methodology to the analysis of the phenomenon of the play within the planes of language, culture and media in general allows conceptualization of the play as a multilevel social formation, with different forms of representation at different levels of modalization.

Keywords: play, D. Zilberman’s modal methodology, language play, play in the space of culture, play and media.
