Urgency of the research. The research is aimed to study the cultural awareness at the theoretical level, at the empirical study of its components and tasks of developing cultural awareness in higher education which are considered as the means of enriching the possibility of scientific cognition.

Target setting. The purpose of the study is to highlight the emphasis on the formation of cultural competence, to study the current state of the components of teachers’ cultural awareness, to determine the conditions and factors of its development in higher education.

Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. Analysis of the scientific database ("Data science") allows us to trace the main trends of scientific developments in the field of cultural awareness, in particular the study of "national" and "cultural identity" of a person [5], "cultural horizon", which gives the opportunity for cultural and historical cognition, in which a person is not closed in and to which a human is opened [2]. Among the main accents of cultural identity the article points at the higher education (University) [6], which is the condition for creating a personality of a certain cultural type, able to act in all directions and to form "education". The development of cultural awareness takes place on the boundaries of philosophy, philology, cultural studies, history, psychology, and therefore requires an interdisciplinary approach [4].

The research objective. 1. To identify the components of cultural awareness. 2. To analyze and characterize the factors which contribute to the development of cultural awareness. 3. To describe the tasks for the personal growth of high school teaching staff and development of their cultural awareness.

The statement of basic materials. Components of cultural awareness: linguistic; intercultural; socio-cultural; personal. Research of the state of the development of teachers’ cultural awareness (50 respondents) from ten institutions of higher education of Ukraine, which are the representatives of different directions and specialties. The study revealed a significant role of the subjective-personal component in the development of cultural competence. The conditions which promote development of cultural competence are defined as next: 1) orientation to preservation of sacred values; 2) eco-social and psychologically safe space; 3) support from higher education institutions; 4) presence of personal qualities, such as openness, communication, flexibility, tolerance, readiness for uncertainty, the desire for self-realization.

Conclusions. Cultural awareness is determined by the level of development of linguistic, intercultural, socio-cultural and personal components. The factors that contribute to the development of cultural awareness of teaching staff of higher educational institutions: 1) cognitive factors; 2) value factors; 3) behavioral factors. The study outlined the task concerning the developing cultural awareness of high school teaching staff, which promotes the person’s self-expression and self-determination.
