Urgency of the research. The article examines the historiography and phenomenon of leadership as a social phenomenon and its role in managing religious education. It was found that the ancient Greek thinkers emphasized the fact that a wise ruler must receive the necessary education in order to be a wise leader, because according to Plato, wisdom is the main lever in managing people.

Target setting. The concept was revealed, according to which the crowd has a great influence on the leader, and therefore can change the orientation of the latter. The behavioral characteristic of a leader is determined by wisely following the crowd, using the obtained power, taking into account psychological laws. Leadership can also be perceived as a socio-psychological phenomenon consisting of a set of personal traits of an individual that allow leaders to occupy a key position and hold the reins of power due to their unique qualities.

Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. In the 20th century a theory was put forward, according to which a person becomes a leader not because of personal traits, but because of the effect of situational circumstances. From now on, leadership begins to be seen as a group role and this point of view began to dominate further research. As a result, the theory of situational leadership has become widespread among researchers in the field of social psychology.

The research objective. The purpose of the study is to outline the phenomenon of leadership as an integral component in the management of religious education, namely the outline and analysis of the meaningful concept “leadership in religious education”.

The statement of basic material. The meaning of the concept "leadership as a function of the group" is clarified, which states that the group should choose a leader that would satisfy its needs and interests. In the early 1960s, a synthetic theory of leadership was formed, which united all existing concepts. There was also an understanding of leadership as a phenomenon in the education management system. It was determined that the optimization of control levers is one of the main conditions for the creation of effective functioning of religious education. The new view of leadership was considered from now on as a formative process that arises from a special set of factors: environment, group and cultural characteristics. It was found that in order to maintain power, the leader must constantly monitor the mood, behavior and thoughts of the members of his group.

Conclusions. Analyzing this problem and its evolutionary processes, the authors come to the conclusion that a general doctrine of leadership in social psychology is still missing, as evidenced by numerous researches of psychologists.

Key words: leadership, religious education, management of the educational process.
